Poland | School Language Volunteer

Rebecca, a 19-year-old from Germany, took part in a transformative volunteering experience as a School Language Assistant at a school in Poland.

In her role, Rebecca supported English and German lessons, using interactive activities such as games and role play to help students build confidence and improve their communication skills. While there were some initial challenges around receiving her allowance, Rebecca worked with the school to resolve this and felt well supported throughout the process. Above all, she found the experience deeply rewarding and enjoyed developing her teaching skills while working with children.

“I love working with kids and have developed excellent teaching skills. Getting paid my allowance was more complicated than anticipated, as I needed a different bank account, but I was supported through it.

“I had no plans after school and wanted to try something different. I’m interested in languages and teaching, so this felt perfect.

Living Away for the First Time

Living away from her parents for the first time came with its challenges, but Rebecca gradually found her independence. She felt welcomed by the people she met and was particularly struck by the warmth and hospitality of those around her, which helped her settle into life in Poland.

“It’s hard living away from my parents, but the Polish people are very warm and hospitable, which made it easier for me to settle in.”

Food and Accommodation

Rebecca stayed with host families and ate meals provided by the school, which she found familiar and comforting. Living with different host families every two months gave her the chance to build new relationships and experience a variety of family life, as well as enjoy trips and activities at weekends.

“The food is similar to Germany, so it is great. I always have a private room and spend time with the family, going out at weekends, playing games at home and going on trips.”
