Spain | School Language Volunteer

Clara, a 19-year-old from Germany, joined New Ventures Worldwide as a School Language Volunteer in Spain, supporting English lessons at a primary school for children aged 5–11. Her role involves assisting teachers in the classroom, reading books with students, encouraging conversation, and helping tailor lessons for events such as Christmas and Diwali.

Although she was unsure of her place at first, Clara gradually grew in confidence and found her footing in the classroom. She particularly enjoys working closely with the children, describing them as funny, curious, and full of energy. Living in a more remote area was an adjustment, requiring taxis or lifts to get around, but it also encouraged her to embrace a slower pace of life.

“I work in a primary school in Spain with children aged 5–11, helping in English classes, reading books, and having conversations with the students. At first I was unsure of my place, but I’ve grown much more confident.”

Motivation to Volunteer

Clara was looking for international work experience rather than traditional travel. Keen to take a gap year after finishing school, she wanted a practical role in education to help confirm her ambition to become a teacher.

“I wanted international work experience, not just travelling. I wanted a gap year after school and to work in education because I want to become a teacher.”

Living Away from Home for the First Time

Living away from home has been both challenging and rewarding for Clara. While she misses her family, she feels settled in Spain and enjoys the independence that comes with living abroad. The welcoming school team and friendly local community have helped her feel supported and at ease.

“I miss my family, but I’m really content in Spain and love exploring my independence. The people here are open and friendly, and the school team is so welcoming.”

Food and Accommodation

Clara lives with a host family and has her own private bedroom and bathroom. Staying with a host family has helped her feel at home, although adjusting to Spanish meal times and diet took some getting used to.

“I’m staying with a host family and have my own bedroom and bathroom. The food and meal times were very different at first — lunch at 3 pm and dinner at 9:30 pm.”

Support from New Ventures Worldwide

Despite applying at the last minute, Clara felt well supported by New Ventures Worldwide throughout the process. NVW helped ensure paperwork was completed on time and supported her through interviews, which she found challenging but valuable for improving her English.

“Even though my application was last minute, NVW worked hard to get everything finished on time. The interviews were nerve-wracking, but a really good learning experience.”

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations

Clara feels the experience has helped her grow in independence and appreciation for her family and support network. Professionally, the placement has reinforced her desire to become a teacher and confirmed that education is the right path for her.

“I’m more independent and more thankful for the things I have. Professionally, I still want to be a teacher. This experience has confirmed it for me.”

Advice for Aspiring Volunteers

Looking back, Clara encourages others to think carefully about what they want from a gap year and to choose an experience that offers both enjoyment and practical value.

“Do it. Think about what you want from your gap year. Whether it’s fun, practical experience, or something that will help your future.”
