A Gap Year Volunteer Project in Ghana Like No Other

Are you looking for a meaningful experience that pushes your boundaries and leaves a genuine mark on the lives of others? As a community volunteer in Ghana, Africa, you’ll play a hands-on role supporting some of the most rewarding and distinctive projects we offer, set in small towns near Cape Coast, one of Ghana’s most historic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unlike a conventional gap year, this placement puts you at the heart of real community development work. Depending on your interests and skills, you might find yourself supporting health campaigns and shadowing doctors at an under-resourced medical centre, or working alongside a unique initiative that uses football as a vehicle to reconnect school dropouts with education. Both are genuinely impactful, genuinely challenging, and unlike anything most volunteers have experienced before.

Beyond the projects, you’ll be immersed in authentic Ghanaian life, living with a host family and experiencing daily life in a way that no tourist itinerary could offer. Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise through their own networks before they arrive, both to help cover costs and to contribute directly to the projects they’ll be working on. If you’re looking for a gap year volunteer project in Ghana, Africa that is transformative in the truest sense, this is it.

What You'll Do Day to Day

A genuine mix of community project work, hands-on support, and cultural immersion.

You’ll assist with health campaigns and community education, all while gaining invaluable experience through shadowing and observing doctors in an under-resourced medical environment. The presence of dedicated volunteers in these centres makes a genuine difference to what they can offer the communities they serve.

Football for Hope

You’ll be part of a unique initiative that uses football as a tool to reconnect school dropouts with education. Alongside the football programme, there are opportunities to contribute to an IT centre and participate in a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project, making this one of the most varied and impactful volunteer roles we offer.

Contribute to Community Life

Across both project types, you’ll work closely with local staff and fellow volunteers, becoming a genuine part of the community rather than an outside observer. Your flexibility, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved shape the difference you make every single day.

Work Schedule

This placement differs from a standard 9–5 and requires flexibility. You’ll have at least two days off per week to explore the local area and experience everything Ghana has to offer.

Food & Accommodation

You’ll live with a Ghanaian host family, experiencing authentic home life and traditional Ghanaian meals. You’ll stay in a private room or a twin room shared with another volunteer, giving you an immersive experience of Ghanaian culture and customs from day one. Accommodation is charged at $125 USD per month in addition to the programme fee.

Community & Teamwork

You’ll usually be part of a wider team of similarly aged volunteers, giving you a ready-made peer group to support and socialise with alongside a diverse, multi-generational local staff team. It’s a genuinely collaborative environment where everyone’s contribution matters.

Fundraising

Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise through friends, family and wider networks, both to help cover their own costs and to raise money directly for the projects. Many volunteers find the fundraising process itself a meaningful part of the experience, and we can provide guidance on how to approach it.

Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day on placement. Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.

Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your background, interests and what you’re hoping to get from the experience. Your Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for a community placement in Ghana. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable project and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.

As early as possible. Placements start in January, June or September and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.

Yes, most volunteers will need a visa to volunteer in Ghana, and you must be at least 17 at the point of application. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.

No formal qualifications are required. What matters most is a genuine enthusiasm for community development work, an adaptable attitude and a willingness to get stuck in. Whether you have an interest in health, education, sport or community development more broadly, there will be a project that suits you.

You’ll assist with health campaigns and community education while gaining experience through shadowing and observing doctors in a real, under-resourced medical environment. It’s one of the most varied and distinctive volunteer roles we offer.

Fundraising is strongly encouraged but not compulsory. Yes, return flights and travel insurance are not included in the programme fee and need to be arranged independently. Your travel insurance must meet the requirements of the host country, and you’ll need to share your policy details with us before your placement begins. Your host family, local coordinator and Programme Manager are your first points of contact for day-to-day matters, and the wider NVW team is always available if something more serious arises. We check in regularly throughout your placement and visit placements annually to make sure standards are being met. No concern is too small to raise with us.
