Alongside this, you’ll have responsibilities in the boarding house, helping students start their day, ensuring they have breakfast, and maintaining a warm and welcoming environment on campus.

Bring Your Own Skills and Interests
Alongside your school day responsibilities, you’ll play an active role in the boarding house. This includes helping students get ready for the day, making sure they have breakfast, and contributing to a welcoming and supportive environment on campus. Is This the Right Placement for You?

- Are at least 17 when applying, and 18 by the time you apply for your visa (and no older than 30)
- Are a native or near-native English speaker
- Are mature, responsible and confident working with young people
- Have some prior experience working or volunteering with children or young people
- Enjoy teamwork and can build genuine rapport with students
- Are flexible and happy to work a variable rota including mornings, evenings and weekends
- Have an interest in sport (beneficial but not essential)
- Can cover the programme fee and other associated costs (flights, insurance etc.)
What Life at a New Zealand School Actually Looks Like

Work Schedule
This is a residential school placement, not a typical 9–5. Expect a variable rota that includes mornings, evenings and weekends, with approximately 40 hours of work per week. You’ll have two days off per week plus school holidays to explore New Zealand at your own pace.
Weekly Allowance
You’ll receive a spending allowance of approximately $120 NZD per week, giving you the means to enjoy your days off and make the most of life in New Zealand.
Food & Accommodation
Most volunteers share meals with the wider school team in the dining hall, where a range of dietary requirements are catered for. You’ll have a room on campus, either in the boarding house or a staff flat, with a bathroom shared with other staff members. Some placements also offer access to a shared kitchen.
Community & Teamwork
You’ll usually have at least one fellow volunteer by your side, as well as the wider local staff team around you. Volunteering at a New Zealand residential school means working closely with a diverse team of all ages and becoming a genuine member of the school community from day one.

Why does NVW charge a fee?
New Ventures Worldwide is a UK-registered nonprofit charity. The fee contributes to our operating costs and allows us to continue our mission of arranging carefully vetted volunteering placements for our global network of nonprofit organisations. A financial report is published annually to the UK Charity Commission.

Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your background, skills and experience. Your Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for a school placement in New Zealand. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable school and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in July and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa to volunteer at a New Zealand school. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
Some prior experience working or volunteering with children or young people is preferred for this placement, as the residential school environment requires a level of maturity and confidence from day one. That said, experience doesn’t have to be formal, and we’ll assess this as part of the interview process.
