A Gap Year Camp Placement in the UK Like No Other
Are you ready for a dynamic, adventure-packed role at the heart of British outdoor education? As an outdoor camp volunteer in the UK, you’ll play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operation of camps run by Scouts, Guides and the YMCA, delivering education programmes to young people in some of Britain’s most spacious and beautiful rural settings.
Your role combines real responsibility with genuine adventure. Alongside overseeing day-to-day camp duties, you’ll assist and even lead a wide range of exhilarating activities, from archery and swimming to climbing, canoeing, high ropes, hiking, sailing and group games. It’s an active, hands-on placement where your enthusiasm for the outdoors and your ability to connect with young people makes a tangible difference every single day.
Comprehensive training is provided from the start, and there’s a real opportunity to gain recognised activity instructor certifications as you go. Beyond the placement itself, you’ll be part of a large, international community of volunteers and staff, building friendships that last long after the season ends and exploring Britain’s countryside, towns and cities on your days off. If you’re looking for a gap year camp placement in the UK that combines meaningful work with genuine adventure, this is it.

What You'll Do Day to Day
A genuine mix of outdoor activity, working with young people, and keeping camp life running smoothly.
Help instructors run sessions including archery, canoeing, climbing, swimming, high ropes, hiking, sailing and group games. As your confidence grows, you’ll have the opportunity to lead activities yourself and gain recognised formal instructor certifications along the way.
Encourage & Inspire Young People
Support children and young people as they challenge themselves, building their confidence, resilience and sense of adventure. Your energy and enthusiasm make a real difference to their experience of camp life and the outdoor education programmes you deliver together.
Keep the Camp Running
Around 30% of your role involves the practical upkeep of the camp, from equipment preparation and maintenance to cleaning and general camp duties. Every role matters, and this is what keeps everything running smoothly for everyone.
Is This the Right Placement for You?

- Are enthusiastic about teamwork, adventure and trying new things
- Are happy helping with practical tasks around camp

What Life at a UK Outdoor Camp Actually Looks Like
Everything you need to know about the day-to-day practicalities of your placement.
Work Schedule
Camp life is a lifestyle, not a 9–5. Expect active, full days throughout your placement with a genuine work hard, play hard culture. The rota varies depending on the camp’s programme schedule, but days off and time to explore Britain are built into the placement throughout.
Financial Reimbursement
Rather than a standard weekly allowance, volunteers on this placement receive a weekly reimbursement towards their programme fee, flights, visa and travel insurance during the placement. The exact reimbursement amount varies and will be confirmed during your interview.
Food & Accommodation
You’ll live on site in shared staff accommodation, usually in twin or bunk bed rooms with other international volunteers. You’ll have access to a shared kitchen and receive a food allowance to cover your meals.
Community & Teamwork
Outdoor camps are friendly, sociable and full of energy. You’ll be part of a large international community of volunteers and local staff, with plenty of opportunities to connect, explore and build friendships that last well beyond the placement.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day at school. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. For you and your family, that peace of mind is built into every placement we offer.

James Langdon
Programme Manager UK
James has spent decades working in international volunteering, including senior roles at VSO, The Prince’s Trust and Lattitude Global Volunteering, where he became CEO. His own gap year in Indonesia in 1986 sparked a lifelong passion for what time abroad can do for a young person. He personally oversees every UK placement to make sure it is safe, well supported and genuinely worthwhile.
“Our UK camps have a real sense of community and purpose. Volunteers find themselves part of a tight-knit international team, doing meaningful work in beautiful surroundings, and the young people they work with feel that energy every single day.”
A Message From One of Our UK Camps
Ned | Manager, Blackwell Adventure Outdoor Camp (since 2007)
We asked Ned to describe the camp and what volunteers can expect from their time there. Here’s what he said:
“Blackwell Adventure placements are designed to support volunteers in developing their teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. But the experiences they have are often the most valuable. Volunteers face their fears, support each other, and make connections that can last a lifetime.
The skills and knowledge developed at a residential centre like ours are all transferable, lifelong skills that will prepare volunteers for future challenges. It’s an exceptional experience watching the journey of a volunteer, from the first meeting to seeing them bring all their ideas and hard work to life.
We have always had a good relationship with NVW, and our shared values are why we have always gotten on so well.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.
Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your interests, skills and what you’re looking for. Your UK Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for this placement. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable camp and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in February or August and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa. The visa costs £319, and if your placement is longer than six months there is also a UK health surcharge of £1,030. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the costs, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
No prior experience is required. Enthusiasm, energy and a genuine enjoyment of the outdoors and working with young people matter far more than a formal background. Comprehensive training is provided from the start, and there’s a real opportunity to gain recognised activity instructor certifications as you go.
You need at least a B2 level of English or equivalent. The camp environment is fast-paced and communication with young people, colleagues and parents is central to the role, so a solid command of English is essential. If you’re unsure whether your level is sufficient, apply and we’ll assess this as part of the interview process.
The specific certifications available depend on the camp and the activities it runs, but volunteers regularly gain recognised instructor qualifications in activities such as archery, canoeing, climbing and high ropes. We’ll go through what’s available at your matched placement during the interview process.
Yes, return flights and travel insurance are not included in the programme fee and need to be arranged independently. Your travel insurance must meet the requirements of the host country, and you’ll need to share your policy details with us before your placement begins. We’ll advise on what to look for if you need guidance.
The camps are in spacious rural areas across Buckinghamshire, West Midlands, Staffordshire, Hampshire, Norfolk and Shropshire. All are operated by established organisations including Scouts, Guides and the YMCA, in settings that give you genuine access to the British countryside.
You won’t be on your own. Your placement supervisor and local coordinator are your first point of contact for day-to-day matters, and the NVW team is always available for additional support if something more serious arises. We check in regularly throughout your placement and visit placements annually to make sure standards are being met. No concern is too small to raise with us.
Volunteers consistently highlight personal growth, practical outdoor skills and an incredible international community as the standout takeaways. You’ll gain recognised certifications, build genuine experience working with young people, and spend a year living and working in some of Britain’s most beautiful rural landscapes. The friendships you build, with people from all over the world, tend to last a lifetime.
