A Gap Year School Placement in Canada Like No Other
Are you ready for a dynamic, hands-on role at the heart of Canadian school life? As a school volunteer in Canada, you’ll play a pivotal role in the day-to-day life of a traditional boarding school, set in British Columbia and Winnipeg. These are real schools with real responsibilities, and your contribution matters from day one.
Your role combines genuine care for young people with variety and purpose. Alongside supporting boarding house routines and school day duties, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your own skills, whether in language, art, music, drama or sport, to enrich the educational experience of the students around you. It’s an active, people-centred placement where your enthusiasm and initiative make a tangible difference every single day.
Comprehensive training and preparation is provided before your placement begins, and you’ll be part of a close-knit staff team that includes other volunteers, teachers and school staff. Beyond the placement itself, you’ll have the Canadian school holidays to explore forests, lakes and mountain towns, building memories that last long after the year ends. If you’re looking for a gap year school placement in Canada that combines meaningful work with genuine adventure, this is it.
What You'll Do Day to Day
A genuine mix of boarding house duties, supporting school life, and contributing your own skills.
During term time, students live on campus and you’ll be central to keeping things running smoothly. Day-to-day responsibilities include wake-up routines, meal supervision, laundry tasks, organising bedtimes and general housekeeping duties. It’s busy, rewarding work that puts you right at the heart of school life.
Encourage & Inspire Young People
You’ll support students through homework clubs, evening activities, weekend events, sports and excursions. Your energy, reliability and genuine interest in the young people around you makes a real difference to their experience of school life and their confidence day to day.
Contribute Your Own Skills
If you have skills in language, art, music, drama or sport, there will be real opportunities to support relevant departments during the school day and enrich what the school offers. This is a placement where what you bring as an individual genuinely matters to the students and staff around you.
Is This the Right Placement for You?
We share our requirements upfront so you can be confident you’re eligible before you apply. This placement could be perfect for you if you:
- Are at least 17 when applying, and 18 by the time you apply for your visa (and no older than 30)
- Are a native or near-native English speaker
- Enjoy working with children and young people
- Are enthusiastic about teamwork and taking initiative
- Are happy to work flexibly and engage in all aspects of school life
- Have a skill or interest in language, art, music, drama or sport (desirable but not essential)
- Can cover the programme fee and other associated costs (flights, insurance etc.)
What Life at a Canadian School Actually Looks Like
Everything you need to know about the day-to-day practicalities of your placement.
Work Schedule
School life is full and varied, not a 9–5. During term time you’ll be a busy and valued member of the school team, fitting in with the rhythms of the school day and boarding house schedule. School holidays are yours to explore Canada at your own pace.
Weekly Allowance
You’ll receive a spending allowance of approximately $90 USD per week, giving you the means to enjoy your time off, explore local towns, and make the most of life in Canada.
Food & Accommodation
Three meals a day are provided during term time, and an extra food allowance is given during school holidays. Expect traditional Canadian hospitality, including the obligatory maple syrup pancakes. Volunteers stay either in a dormitory on the school campus or with a host family.
Community & Teamwork
Each school accepts up to four volunteers at a time, so there’s always a peer group around you. You’ll work closely with a diverse staff team of all ages, becoming a genuine member of the wider school community rather than an outsider looking in.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Canada Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day at school. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. For you and your family, that peace of mind is built into every placement we offer.

Beata Skokowska
Programme Manager Canada
Beata has worked in international volunteering for 17 years and has built connections with people and communities all over the world. She is a black belt in Aikido and has trekked 48 kilometres through the Tatra mountains in two days, so she knows a thing or two about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.
“What makes the Canada school placement special is how quickly volunteers become part of the fabric of the school. The boarding house creates a real sense of community, and volunteers find themselves at the heart of it, not just supporting students but genuinely belonging to something. That sense of being truly needed is rare, and it matters.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.
Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your background, interests and what you’re hoping to get from the year. Your Canada Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for a school placement. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable school and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in September and spaces across our three schools are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa to volunteer at a Canadian school. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
No prior experience is required. What matters most is a genuine enjoyment of working with young people, a willingness to take initiative, and the flexibility to get stuck into all aspects of school life. You’ll be supported from the start, and the role itself is a brilliant way to build real experience working in an educational setting.
Any skills in language, art, music, drama or sport are particularly welcome, as there will be opportunities to contribute to relevant departments during the school day. That said, boarding house duties and general support are the core of the role, so a positive attitude and strong work ethic matter far more than any specific skill set.
You need to be a native or near-native English speaker. The school environment involves constant communication with students, colleagues and parents, so a strong command of English is essential. If you’re unsure whether your level is sufficient, apply and we’ll assess this as part of the interview process.
Yes, return flights and travel insurance are not included in the programme fee and need to be arranged independently. Your travel insurance must meet the requirements of the host country, and you’ll need to share your policy details with us before your placement begins. We’ll advise on what to look for if you need guidance.
The placements are based in traditional boarding schools in British Columbia and Winnipeg. There are two girls’ schools and one mixed primary and secondary institution. All are established schools with supportive staff teams, and each accepts up to four volunteers at a time so you’ll always have peers around you.
You won’t be on your own. Your placement supervisor and school staff are your first point of contact for day-to-day matters, and the NVW team is always available for additional support if something more serious arises. We check in regularly throughout your placement and visit placements annually to make sure standards are being met. No concern is too small to raise with us.
Volunteers consistently highlight the combination of personal growth and genuine professional experience as the standout takeaway. You’ll develop confidence, adaptability and real skills working in an educational setting, all while living and working in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The relationships you build with students, staff and fellow volunteers tend to stay with you long after the year ends.
