Canada | School Volunteer
Meike, 18, and Jette, 19, both from Germany, are volunteering as School Volunteers in Canada with New Ventures Worldwide. Taking a gap year before university, they support teaching staff across different age groups, from junior school and kindergarten to boarding house duties. We caught up with them to hear how their experiences have shaped their confidence, independence, and future plans.
Motivation to Volunteer
Both Meike and Jette were motivated by a desire to take a gap year, experience life in a new country, and grow personally before moving on to university or work. Encouraged by recommendations from family and friends, they saw volunteering in Canada as an opportunity to improve their English, gain real-world experience, and step outside their comfort zones.
“I wanted to take a gap year after school, explore a new country and its culture, and improve my English.”
Meike
“I wanted to meet new people, improve my English, and do something different before going to university and getting a job.”

Role and Responsibilities
As School Volunteers, Meike and Jette support teachers in the classroom and assist with a range of school and boarding house duties. Meike works closely with pupils during lessons, helping with academic tasks and supporting teachers in managing the classroom. Jette focuses primarily on junior school and kindergarten, assisting with activities, administration, and caring for children in the boarding environment.
Both have found working with children to be energetic, demanding, and unexpectedly rewarding.
“I love working with the kids. They have so much energy, and it’s helped me realise that patience is one of my strengths.”
Meike
“I used to think kids were a bit annoying, but now I love working with them. Getting out of my comfort zone has taught me so much.”

Living Away from Home for the First Time
Living independently for the first time came with challenges for both volunteers. Meike initially experienced homesickness but gradually settled into her new routine, enjoying the friendliness of the local community and making the most of her free time to travel and explore.
Jette also found independence demanding at first, learning to manage household responsibilities and shared living. While adjusting to Canada’s colder climate and city life took time, she now feels settled and confident.
“The first two months were tough, but the people being so friendly and open really helped. I love having time to travel and explore.”
Meike
“Living independently is a lot of work, but I’m getting used to it. The people here are incredibly kind and welcoming.”

Food and Accommodation
Meals are provided by the school, offering a varied menu including dishes such as pasta, sushi, tacos, and other international options. Meike appreciates the convenience of having meals provided, while also learning practical life skills such as managing household chores.
Jette lives in accommodation above the school with other volunteers, adapting to shared living while managing her own dietary needs. Despite occasional challenges, both have adjusted well to their living arrangements.
“The school provides all the meals, which is really handy. I’m also learning to take care of myself properly.”
Meike
“Living above the school is very convenient, and sharing with other volunteers has helped me learn how to manage things independently.”

Support from New Ventures Worldwide
Both Meike and Jette felt well supported by New Ventures Worldwide throughout their placements. NVW provided guidance during the application and visa process and remained available for support once they were in Canada, helping ensure a smooth and reassuring experience.
“The visa process took a long time, but NVW were always there to support me when I needed help.”
Meike
“The experience with NVW has been very straightforward. It’s reassuring knowing there’s an organisation there to support me.”

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations
Volunteering in Canada has had a lasting impact on both Meike and Jette. Meike has gained valuable insight into working life in a school environment and developed a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism. Jette has learned more about herself, her communication style, and how to navigate new environments with confidence.
Their experiences have helped shape their future ambitions, from education and psychology to business-focused pathways.
“This experience has prepared me for future working life and taught me what responsibility really means.”
Meike
“I’m learning more about myself and becoming more open-minded with people, which will really help me in the future.”

Advice for Aspiring Volunteers
Both encourage future volunteers to approach the experience with openness, gratitude, and a willingness to embrace change. While living and working abroad can be challenging, they believe the personal growth makes it more than worthwhile.
“Be aware it will be very different from home, but enjoy every moment and make the most of the opportunity.”
Meike
“Always try to see the positives and be grateful. It’s an incredible chance to experience a new culture and grow as a person.”
