Canada | Outdoor Camp Volunteer
Hannes and Toni, both 20 and from Germany, spent their gap year volunteering at a outdoor camp in Canada with New Ventures Worldwide. Living and working in a remote, nature-filled setting, they supported outdoor activities, helped prepare the camp for the season, and became part of a close-knit international community.
Motivation to Volunteer
Both Hannes and Toni had wanted to take a gap year from a young age. Encouraged by recommendations from friends and family, they were drawn to the idea of volunteering in Canada, combining outdoor adventure with meaningful work and personal growth.
“I wanted a gap year where I could explore, gain experience, and make a difference somewhere really cool.”
Hannes
“I wanted a gap year, and Canada’s nature sounded perfect.”

Role and Responsibilities
At the outdoor camp, Hannes and Toni took on varied and hands-on roles. During quieter periods, they helped prepare the camp and host smaller outdoor school groups. As the camp season began, they supported activities such as archery, forest skills, campfire sessions, and group games.
Toni also worked as a cabin leader, organising activities and supporting campers day to day, while Hannes enjoyed planning sessions and teaching practical outdoor skills.
“I loved working with kids, planning activities, learning forest skills, and making fires. It was epic.”
Hannes
“I enjoyed organising activities and seeing how happy the campers were. You really feel part of something special.”

Living Away from Home for the First Time
Living away from home brought moments of homesickness for both volunteers, especially once the initial excitement settled. However, being surrounded by friendly, welcoming people and stunning landscapes helped them adjust quickly. The experience also encouraged them to embrace independence and disconnect from everyday distractions.
“I did get homesick after the excitement wore off, and the Wi-Fi was terrible, but it helped me get away from my phone and enjoy the woods.”
Hannes
“The landscapes are incredible, and the people are so welcoming. That made settling in much easier.”

Food and Accommodation
Both volunteers lived in cosy log cabins in the woods, sharing accommodation with an international group of staff. Meals were provided communally during busier periods, creating a strong sense of togetherness, while quieter times allowed for more independence.
Although Toni missed German food at times, both appreciated the communal atmosphere and unique setting.
“We became like a big family. Everyone was like-minded, with cool stories from all over the world.”
Hannes
“Living right in the woods was amazing. It really felt like a retreat, even if I missed German food sometimes.”

Support from New Ventures Worldwide
Both Hannes and Toni felt well supported by New Ventures Worldwide throughout the process. When plans changed and Hannes moved from an initial idea of New Zealand to Canada, NVW’s flexibility and guidance ensured a smooth transition. Regular communication and clear information helped both feel prepared and reassured.
“NVW were extremely helpful and made everything straightforward. I’m really glad it worked out this way.”
Hannes
“The whole process was smooth, and I felt fully prepared before I arrived.”

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations
The outdoor camp experience helped both volunteers grow in confidence, independence, and open-mindedness. Hannes discovered a desire to continue volunteering alongside his interest in automotive management, while Toni found himself becoming more outgoing and confident, with thoughts of returning for another season.
“It’s not just visiting a place for two weeks. You really live there, give back, and become part of it.”
Hannes
“I want to keep that sense of freedom. This experience helped me become more open and confident.”

Advice for Aspiring Volunteers
Looking back, both encourage future volunteers to trust their instincts and embrace the opportunity, even if it feels daunting at first. They believe the friendships, confidence, and perspective gained make the experience truly life-changing.
“It’s a great way to become more confident, independent, and open-minded.”
Hannes
“If you’re thinking about it, then something in you probably needs to do it.”
