UK | Outdoor Camp Volunteer

Nicole, a 19-year-old from Germany, joined New Ventures Worldwide as a Outdoor Camp Volunteer in the UK, embarking on a transformative gap year experience. Her first two months were dedicated to intensive training, covering everything from water rescue techniques and zip-wire rescues to orienteering.

By the end of the training period, Nicole had qualified as a confident activity leader, able to guide groups of children through a wide range of activities. She quickly discovered how much she enjoyed working with young people, especially the energy and variety that came with welcoming a new group of children each week. Although she arrived on her own, she soon felt part of a close-knit community and formed strong friendships with her team.

“The first two months were all training. I was assessed on all activities and can now lead groups of children. It’s lots of fun. I love working with children, and even though I came alone, I now have many friends and feel part of a real community.”

Motivation to Volunteer

Nicole decided to volunteer after finishing school, inspired by her sister’s gap year experiences. She was keen to gain real-world work experience, broaden her perspective, and take her first steps towards independence away from home.

“Inspired by my sister, I wanted to do a gap year after school. I knew it would give me proper work experience, a new perspective, and real independence.”

Living Away from Home for the First Time

Living away from home for the first time felt surprisingly natural for Nicole. Surrounded by a large team of volunteers and instructors, she quickly settled into camp life. Socialising both during and outside of work helped her feel supported and included from the start.

Nicole also noticed cultural differences between the UK and Germany, particularly the UK’s multicultural environment. While adjusting to the weather took some time, she appreciated the open-minded and friendly nature of the people around her.

“The people made it very easy to settle in. We socialise together all the time, and there’s always something fun happening. Everyone is very open-minded and friendly, even if I’m still getting used to the weather.”

Food and Accommodation

All meals were provided at the outdoor camp, something Nicole greatly appreciated, with fish and chips becoming a favourite Friday tradition. Her accommodation evolved over time, starting in a shared room before moving into a smaller room shared with two others.

The rooms were comfortable and spacious, each with its own bathroom. A communal lodge provided a social hub, complete with a large TV and private kitchen.

“The food here is delicious, and I love that all meals are provided. My accommodation is very comfortable, and we spend a lot of time together in the lodge.”

Nicole describes her experience with New Ventures Worldwide as smooth and supportive from start to finish. From the interview stage through to ongoing check-ins during her placement, she felt well guided and reassured throughout the process.

“Everything was very smooth, from the interview to the support before I arrived and while I’ve been here. NVW have been great at every step.”

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations

One of the most profound changes Nicole experienced was in her emotional confidence. Being part of a close, supportive community helped her feel comfortable expressing her emotions and seeing vulnerability as normal.

This experience has strongly influenced her future plans. Nicole now hopes to study psychology and become a therapist, working with children and teenagers.

“Before, I found it hard to express my emotions. Being part of this community helped me realise it’s normal. Now I want to study psychology and become a therapist for children and teenagers.”

Advice for Aspiring Volunteers

Reflecting on her experience, Nicole acknowledges the nerves she felt at the start but encourages others to take the leap. Immersing herself in the outdoor camp community has been one of the most rewarding decisions of her life.

“I was nervous at first, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Once you’re here with the people and the activities, you realise how special a gap year can be.”
