A Gap Year Camp Experience in Canada Like No Other
Are you ready for a dynamic, socially rewarding role that puts you right at the heart of Canadian outdoor life? As an outdoor camp volunteer in Canada, you’ll play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operation of the camp, set against some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world, in Alberta near Calgary and British Columbia near Vancouver.
Your role combines real responsibility with genuine adventure. Alongside overseeing day-to-day camp duties, you’ll assist and even lead a wide range of exhilarating activities, from archery and swimming to climbing, canoeing, high ropes courses, hiking and group games. It’s an active, hands-on placement where your enthusiasm for the outdoors and your ability to connect with young people makes a tangible difference every single day.
Comprehensive training is provided from the start, and there’s a real opportunity to gain formal certification and become a qualified activity instructor. Beyond the placement itself, you’ll be part of a large, international community of around 70 volunteers and staff, building friendships that last long after the season ends and exploring Canada’s forests, lakes and mountain towns on your days off. If you’re looking for gap year camp opportunities in Canada that combine meaningful work with genuine adventure, this is it.

What You'll Do Day to Day
A genuine mix of outdoor activity, working with young people, and keeping camp life running smoothly.
Help instructors run sessions including archery, canoeing, climbing, swimming, high ropes, hiking and group games. As your confidence grows, you’ll have the opportunity to lead activities yourself and gain formal instructor qualifications.
Encourage & Inspire Young People
Support children and young people as they challenge themselves, building their confidence, resilience and sense of adventure. Your energy and enthusiasm make a real difference to their experience of camp life.
Keep the Camp Running
Around 30% of your role involves the practical upkeep of the camp, from equipment preparation and maintenance to cleaning and general camp duties. Every role matters, and this is what keeps everything running smoothly for everyone.

What Life at Camp Actually Looks Like
Everything you need to know about the day-to-day practicalities of your placement.
Work Schedule
Camp life is a lifestyle, not a 9–5. Expect active, full days throughout the season with a genuine work-hard, play-hard culture. Volunteers have time off to explore Canada before and after the season.
Weekly Allowance
You’ll receive a spending allowance of approximately $90 USD per week, giving you the means to enjoy your days off, explore local towns, and make the most of life in Canada.
Food & Accommodation
The whole team shares meals together in the dining hall, including traditional Canadian food. Volunteers occasionally join the cooking rota. You’ll stay in a wood cabin dormitory with a shared bathroom, included in your fee.
Community & Teamwork
You’ll be part of an international community of around 70 volunteers and local staff. Camp life is friendly, sociable and full of shared experiences, both during the season and on adventures across Canada in your free time.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Canada Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day at camp. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. For you and your family, that peace of mind is built into every placement we offer.

She is a black belt in Aikido and has trekked 48 kilometres through the Tatra mountains in two days, so she knows a thing or two about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.
“Volunteers arrive thinking they are there to lead activities. What they quickly realise is that they are helping young people discover what they are capable of. In the Canadian wilderness, that is a powerful thing to be part of.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.
Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your interests, skills and what you’re looking for. Our Programme Manager will review it and check your suitability for this placement. If it looks like a good fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable placement and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in March or April, and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth applying and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa to volunteer at a Canadian outdoor camp. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
No prior experience is required. Enthusiasm, energy and a genuine enjoyment of working with young people matter far more than a formal background. Comprehensive training is provided from the start of your placement, and there’s a real opportunity to gain formal activity instructor qualifications as you go. Many of our volunteers are doing something like this for the first time, and that’s completely fine.
You need to be a native or near-native English speaker. The camp environment is fast-paced and communication with young people, colleagues and parents is central to the role, so a strong command of English is essential. If you’re unsure whether your level is sufficient, apply and we’ll assess this as part of the interview process.
Yes, return flights and travel insurance are not included in the programme fee and need to be arranged independently. Your travel insurance must meet the requirements of the host country, and you’ll need to share your policy details with us before your placement begins. We’ll advise on what to look for if you need guidance.
Yes, and it’s one of the reasons many first-time independent travellers choose NVW. You’ll be met on arrival, introduced to your placement host, and settled into a structured environment with a ready-made community around you from day one. Your Programme Manager is available throughout, and we send comprehensive pre-departure information so you know exactly what to expect before you leave.
Yes. If you and a friend both want to do this placement, let us know when you apply and we’ll do our best to place you together. Camp life is inherently social and you’ll quickly build a wider community of volunteers and staff around you regardless, but we understand it helps to have a familiar face from day one.
You won’t be on your own. Your placement supervisor and local coordinator are your first point of contact for day-to-day matters, and the NVW team is always available for additional support if something more serious arises. We check in regularly throughout your placement and visit placements annually to make sure standards are being met. No concern is too small to raise with us.
Beyond the adventure and the landscapes, volunteers consistently highlight personal growth as the biggest takeaway, becoming more confident, independent and adaptable in ways that stay with them long after the placement ends. You’ll gain practical skills, the opportunity to earn formal activity instructor qualifications, and genuine experience working with young people that strengthens your CV. The friendships you build, with an international community of like-minded people, tend to last a lifetime.
