A Gap Year Australia School Programme Like No Other
Are you a mature, responsible individual looking to make a genuine difference to young people’s lives? As a school volunteer in Australia, you’ll play a meaningful role supporting staff and students at a residential school, set against some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world, from the red centre of Alice Springs to the forests of Tasmania.
Your role is shaped by your individual skills and experience, and no two placements are the same. You might find yourself supporting a sports department, working in a library, taking on a mentoring role, or getting involved in school carnivals and activities. Some volunteers work in schools with exceptional facilities like equestrian centres, while others contribute to Aboriginal schools facing unique and important challenges. Whatever your background, you’ll be matched to a placement where your strengths can make a real impact.
Beyond the school, you’ll be part of a ready-made community of staff and fellow volunteers, with school holidays and days off to explore Australia at your own pace. If you’re looking for a gap year Australia school programme that combines meaningful work with genuine adventure, this is it.

What Life at an Australian School Actually Looks Like
Everything you need to know about the day-to-day practicalities of your placement.
Work Schedule
This is a residential school placement, not a typical 9–5. Expect a variable rota that includes mornings, evenings and weekends, with approximately 40 hours of work per week. You’ll have two days off per week plus school holidays to explore Australia at your own pace.
Weekly Allowance
You’ll receive a spending allowance of approximately $140 AUD per week, giving you the means to enjoy your days off and make the most of life in Australia.
Food & Accommodation
Most volunteers share meals with the wider school team in the dining hall, where a range of dietary requirements are catered for. You’ll have a private room on campus, either in the boarding house or a staff flat, with a bathroom shared with other staff members. Some placements also offer access to a shared kitchen.
Community & Teamwork
You’ll always have at least one fellow volunteer by your side, as well as the wider local staff team around you. Volunteering at an Australian residential school means working closely with a diverse team of all ages and becoming a genuine member of the school community from day one.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day at school. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. For you and your family, that peace of mind is built into every placement we offer.

“Australia’s schools are as diverse as the country itself, from bustling city campuses to remote indigenous communities, and that diversity is exactly what makes this placement so distinctive. Volunteers don’t just support students, they step into communities that genuinely need them, and the difference they make is felt long after the year is over.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.
Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your background, skills and experience. Your Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for a school placement in Australia. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable school and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in July and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa to volunteer at an Australian school. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
Some prior experience working or volunteering with children or young people is preferred for this placement, as the residential school environment requires a level of maturity and confidence from day one. That said, experience doesn’t have to be formal, and we’ll assess this as part of the interview process.
