As an outdoor camp volunteer in Australia, you’ll play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operation of camps set close to water and mountains across Victoria, within striking distance of Melbourne and some of the country’s most breathtaking natural landscapes.
Your role combines real responsibility with genuine adventure. Alongside overseeing day-to-day camp duties, you’ll assist and even lead a wide range of exhilarating activities, from water sports like paddle boarding, scuba diving, surfing and kayaking to rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes and archery. It’s an active, hands-on placement where your enthusiasm for the outdoors and your ability to connect with young people makes a tangible difference every single day.
Volunteers are matched to camps based on their individual skills and experience, and you’ll work closely with an experienced team of instructors, building your own skills and qualifications along the way. What You'll Do Day to Day
A genuine mix of outdoor activity, working with young people, and keeping camp life running smoothly.
Help instructors run a wide range of exciting sessions including water sports like paddle boarding, scuba diving, surfing and kayaking, as well as rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes, archery and more. As your confidence grows, you’ll have the opportunity to take a more active lead in sessions and build your skills alongside the experienced camp team.
Encourage & Inspire Young People
Support children and young people as they challenge themselves, building their confidence, resilience and sense of adventure. Your energy and enthusiasm make a real difference to their experience of camp life, and your ability to connect with and encourage kids is at the heart of everything you do.
Keep the Camp Running
Alongside activity work, the role includes practical duties such as cleaning, maintenance, grass cutting, meal preparation and day-to-day camp operations. Every role matters, and this is what keeps everything running smoothly for everyone.

What Life at an Australian Outdoor Camp Actually Looks Like

Work Schedule
Camp life is a lifestyle, not a 9–5. Expect a flexible rota that includes some evening and weekend work, with at least two days off per week plus holiday leave to explore Australia at your own pace.
Weekly Allowance
You’ll receive a spending allowance of between $100 and $140 AUD per week, giving you the means to enjoy your days off and make the most of life in Australia.
Food & Accommodation
You’ll live on site in a private or twin room with a shared bathroom and communal area. Camps provide three meals daily and you’ll have access to basic cooking facilities too. Specific accommodation details vary between camps and will be confirmed once your placement is matched.
Community & Teamwork
Outdoor camps are friendly, sociable and full of energy. You’ll be part of a large international community of volunteers and local staff, with plenty of opportunities to connect, explore and build friendships that last well beyond your placement.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first day at camp. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. Why does NVW charge a fee?
New Ventures Worldwide is a UK-registered nonprofit charity. The fee contributes to our operating costs and allows us to continue our mission of arranging carefully vetted volunteering placements for our global network of nonprofit organisations. A financial report is published annually to the UK Charity Commission.

Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your interests, skills and what you’re looking for. Our Programme Manager will review it and check your suitability for this placement. If it looks like a good fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll match you with a suitable placement and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in August and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa to volunteer at an Australian outdoor camp. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the visa cost, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
