A Gap Year Placement with Homeless Young People Like No Other
Are you ready for one of the most rewarding and genuinely impactful placements we offer? As a homeless shelter volunteer in the UK, you’ll work with Streetlife, a youth work charity providing emergency shelter and support to vulnerable and homeless young people aged 16 to 25, right in the heart of Blackpool.
This is not a passive placement. You’ll be at the front line of support, helping to provide accommodation, food and a safe place to be for young people who need it most. Engaging with guests, supporting full-time staff, managing overnight shifts and helping to plan development opportunities for young people are all central to the role. The work is challenging, meaningful and genuinely unlike anything most volunteers have experienced before.
Beyond the placement itself, you’ll be based in Blackpool, a busy, characterful town on the North-West coast of England with a famous promenade, beachfront and plenty going on, particularly in the summer months. You’ll live in a comfortable six-bedroom house within walking distance of both the shelter and the base, alongside fellow volunteers who become a real support network throughout the year. If you’re looking for a gap year volunteering placement with homeless young people that makes a genuine and visible difference every single day, this is it.

What You'll Do Day to Day
A genuine mix of front-line support, overnight shelter work, and contributing to young people's development.
You’ll engage with, support and build appropriate relationships with the young people who use Streetlife’s services, helping to provide emergency accommodation, food and a safe environment during overnight shifts. Each overnight shift is worked alongside another member of staff, supporting a group of up to eight young people through the night.
Base Shifts and Day-to-Day Operations
Alongside overnight work, you’ll take on base shifts including reception duties, supporting drop-in sessions, ordering supplies and managing food donations. Every part of the operation matters, and your contribution keeps the service running smoothly for the young people who depend on it.
Help Deliver Development Opportunities
You’ll play an active role in helping to plan and deliver development opportunities for the young people Streetlife supports, giving them access to experiences and skills that can make a real difference to their futures. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.

What Life as a Homeless Shelter Volunteer Actually Looks Like
Everything you need to know about the day-to-day practicalities of your placement.
Work Schedule
This placement runs on a shift pattern rather than a standard 9–5. You’ll work roughly 10 shifts per week, with each shift lasting three to four hours. Overnight shifts at the shelter count as two and a half shifts. Due to the nature of the work, time off during public and bank holidays is not always guaranteed and would need to be negotiated with fellow volunteers.
Weekly Reimbursement
You’ll receive a weekly payment of £77 GBP towards expenses incurred in preparation for or during your volunteering, helping to cover day-to-day costs throughout the placement.
Food & Accommodation
You’ll live in a spacious six-bedroom house within easy walking distance of both the shelter and the base. The house has six en-suite rooms, a large kitchen, lounge and conservatory. Volunteers generally cook for themselves, and as Blackpool is a reasonably affordable place to live, feeding yourself well while still having money left over is very manageable.
Community & Teamwork
You’ll always have at least one fellow volunteer by your side, giving you a built-in support network both at work and at home. You’ll also collaborate with a diverse, multi-generational staff team at Streetlife, becoming a genuine part of a close-knit organisation that cares deeply about the people it serves.
Support & Safety Throughout Your Placement
Every NVW placement is carefully vetted, and you are never on your own. Before you leave, your UK Programme Manager will prepare you thoroughly for everything ahead, from visa guidance to what to expect on your first shift at Streetlife. Once you're there, you'll have clear roles, ongoing check-ins, and a direct line back to the NVW team if anything comes up. For you and your family, that peace of mind is built into every placement we offer.

James Langdon
Programme Manager UK
James has spent decades working in international volunteering, including senior roles at VSO, The Prince’s Trust and Lattitude Global Volunteering, where he became CEO. His own gap year in Indonesia in 1986 sparked a lifelong passion for what time abroad can do for a young person. He personally oversees every UK placement to make sure it is safe, well supported and genuinely worthwhile.
“This is the placement I recommend to people who want to be truly tested and truly useful in equal measure. The young people at Streetlife don’t need observers. They need people who show up, night after night, and genuinely care. That’s exactly what our volunteers do.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about applying for and completing this placement.
Start by completing our application form, which helps us understand your background, interests and what you’re looking for from the experience. Your UK Programme Manager will review it and assess your suitability for this placement. If it looks like a strong fit, you’ll be invited to a friendly video interview, usually around 40 minutes, where you can get to know the NVW team, ask your questions, and make sure the placement is right for you. If successful, we’ll confirm your placement with Streetlife and send you an offer letter. You’ll then secure your place with a deposit, and we’ll guide you through every step from there.
As early as possible. Placements start in August or September, with some flexibility on start dates, and spaces are limited. We recommend applying at least six months in advance to allow enough time for the interview process, background checks, visa application and travel arrangements. That said, if your preferred start date is approaching, it’s still worth getting in touch and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
Yes, most volunteers will need a sponsored visa. The visa costs £319, and as this is a 12-month placement the UK health surcharge of £1,030 also applies. Support with the visa process is included in your programme fee. We’ll explain exactly what’s required for your nationality, provide sponsorship where needed, and guide you through each step. You’ll complete the application yourself and cover the costs, but you won’t be navigating it alone.
You need at least a B2 level of English or equivalent. Working closely with vulnerable young people and a professional staff team requires strong communication skills, and a confident command of English is essential to fulfilling the role effectively.
Prior experience is not essential, but a genuine passion for supporting young people and emotional resilience are both important. Streetlife will provide training and support from the start, and you’ll never be working alone. If you have relevant experience in youth work, social care or a similar field, do mention it in your application.
Overnight shifts involve working alongside another member of staff to support a group of up to eight young people through the night, providing emergency accommodation, food and a safe environment. Each overnight shift counts as two and a half shifts toward your weekly total. It’s demanding work, but many volunteers describe it as one of the most meaningful parts of the placement.
You’ll work roughly 10 shifts per week, with each shift lasting three to four hours. The rota is shift-based rather than a standard 9–5, and includes some evening and overnight work. Time off during public and bank holidays is not always guaranteed and would need to be negotiated with fellow volunteers.
Streetlife is located in the centre of Blackpool on the North-West coast of England. The volunteer house, the shelter and the base are all within easy walking distance of each other, and Blackpool itself is a lively, affordable town with a famous promenade, beachfront and plenty to do, particularly in the summer.
Yes. You’ll receive a weekly payment of £77 GBP towards expenses incurred during your volunteering. Combined with the relatively low cost of living in Blackpool and accommodation being provided, most volunteers find this sufficient for day-to-day needs.
You won’t be on your own. The Streetlife staff team are your first point of contact for day-to-day matters, and the NVW team is always available for additional support if something more serious arises. You’ll also have fellow volunteers living and working alongside you throughout the year. No concern is too small to raise with us.
Volunteers consistently describe this as one of the most genuinely transformative placements we offer. You’ll develop real skills in youth support, communication and resilience in an environment that challenges and rewards you in equal measure. The relationships you build with the young people at Streetlife, and the knowledge that your presence made a real difference to their lives, tend to stay with you long after you return home.
